    1. Basic stress refers to the stress that a piece of timber is expected to withstand under normal conditions. This is determined by taking into account the properties of the timber and the loads it will be subjected to.
    2. Modification factor is a coefficient that is used to adjust the basic stress for certain factors that can affect the strength of the timber. For example, the modification factor may be increased to account for the effects of moisture on the timber, or decreased to account for the presence of knots or other defects.
    3. Grade stress refers to the adjusted stress that a piece of timber is expected to withstand, taking into account the modification factor. This is the stress that is used in design calculations.
    4. Dry stress refers to the stress that a piece of timber is expected to withstand when it is in a dry state. This is typically used as a reference point for determining the grade stress of the timber, as the effects of moisture on the timber’s strength can be significant.
    5. Permissible stress refers to the maximum stress that a piece of timber is allowed to experience during its service life. This is determined by considering the safety and reliability of the structure, as well as the anticipated loads and environmental conditions. The permissible stress is typically less than the grade stress to allow for a margin of safety.
